Histoire : Aventurier, capitaine d'un cargo de commerce, Whip Hoxworth transporte de la main d'oeuvre chinoise jusqu'à Hawaï. Il découvre qu'une femme, Nyuk Tsin, voyage clandestinement avec son mari et doit être vendue à une maison close. Afin de les sauver, Hoxworth les engage comme domestiques dans sa maison entourée d'une plantation d'ananas. Les années passant, Nyuk et son mari Mun deviennent parents de 5 enfants, tandis que leur patron développe un empire et fomente une révolution qui permet l'établissement du protectorat américain sur l'île.
